Mentoring & coaching

“Sanne has been our mentor through the Solutions Journalism Accelerator by the European Journalism Centre and the Solutions Journalism Network. She’s been incredibly supportive and encouraging while providing useful challenges to help us develop and progress in our work. Sanne has really helped me think through how to write and commission articles giving really useful constructive feedback at every stage of the process.”

Amy Hall – co-editor at New Internationalist

How can I help you?

Breathe in and out, the world is going fast, let’s take a break for a minute. Tell me what a successful life means to you and we work towards that vision together.

I help journalists and people working in the media industry (in a broader sense) who deal with the stress of the work and the challenges of the ever-changing landscape. If you are looking for a solutions-focused approach with practical tips & tricks and inspiring conversations, let’s talk. Of course, you will need to do the work yourself, but I offer you a sounding board, strategic approaches and accountability.

I focus on the mindset of working in storytelling, with all the challenges regarding deadlines, objectivity, management and delivering a message to an audience. Coaching is about accepting the reality as it is and finding ways to change habit patterns for the better. It means to understand yourself and the work you’re doing and sometimes unlearn things that don’t benefit you anymore.

Who is it for?

(Freelance) journalists, storytellers, newsroom managers, media startup founders, content creators, communication officers, and anyone who feels connected to my work. Questions you are struggling with could be things like:

  • I feel less inspired about my work lately, in what direction should I move?
  • I am managing a team and I am being lived rather than living myself. What to do?
  • I am working from home, how can I set boundaries and increase productivity?
  • Does the perfect ‘work-life’ balance exist? Please help!
  • Where can I find an outsider’s perspective to help me develop professionally?
  • How to live with a climate crisis that makes me feel anxious about the future?
  • I am struggling with the ‘woke’- debate, what can I do to unravel and understand?

No matter how often you have tried to fix things for yourself (or with professional help), there is always another way.

Let me help you find it.

A Holistic approach:

Holistic health takes the body and mind connection as a starting point and looks at well-being from a mental, physical, emotional, social, environmental, occupational, spiritual and financial angle. It puts an emphasis on growing your self-confidence and intuition so that you can use everything that is there already to benefit your well-being. It is a science-based approach that makes use of techniques from Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), psychotherapy (‘focusing’), and yin yoga.

“Sanne gave me in-depth feedback and wonderful advice for future considerations relating to a dilemma about inclusion. She really takes the time to provide help and I appreciate the work she does with inclusive journalism.”

Johanna Flashman, freelance traveljournalist

What to expect?

Most of the time, it’s not about a lack of knowledge that we don’t succeed in changing our behaviour. We often don’t know how to access the knowledge and experience that is already inside of us. In a coaching trajectory, we will focus on:

  • A solutions-focused approach with a clearly defined help request;
  • Guiding you in one-time, weekly or bi-weekly in-person sessions or online calls (tailored to your availability);
  • Strengthening your confidence to continue on your own and not make you dependent on coaching.

For mentoring, the focus might be slightly different:

  • Specific knowledge and skills sharing depending on the situation (not necessarily with a structured help request);
  • Analytical and strategic advice on the projects you’re working on;
  • Career advice.

Rates

I currently offer the following options:

  • Single Session. A 60 min. consultation in person or by video call to brainstorm strategies and ideas to help you with a particular project or organize your work life. You will receive a follow-up email for potential next steps. (Investment € 120)
  • A Trajectory. A series of (minimal) five sessions each 1,5 hours, scheduled weekly or monthly to change your behaviour and hold you accountable. Free introduction call (see below). (Investment € 600)
  • Mentoring Package. Mentoring is beneficial when it’s done over a longer period. I offer mentoring for six months or a year. With regular calls or in-person meetings (to be discussed) and check-in moments when needed. Tailormade. (Investment € 600/ €3000)
  • The Review. This is open to anyone who wants feedback on their career choices, an article analysis or editing, an assessment of their work or CV, or anything similar. Clients can send me the material and I reply with a voice memo or email with high-level generous feedback. Make use of it! (Investment: € 40)
  • People who live in a low-income country can negotiate a different rate.

Why work with me?

  • First of all, maybe we match, maybe we don’t. That’s why I do an introduction call to find out. You can plan it with Calendly below;
  • In July 2018 I graduated from the two-year Holistic Lifestyle Coaching study at the Academy for Holistic Coaching in Bilthoven, The Netherlands. The program combines knowledge about coaching techniques with information about nutrition, movement, stress reduction and yoga and breathing exercises.
  • After working thirteen years in (semi-) Dutch Public Broadcasting, mostly in managerial positions, I quit my job in 2019 for a sabbatical and I have been working remotely ever since. I spent the pandemic in Bali, Indonesia and learned a lot from the island’s culture and spirituality. As a freelance journalism trainer, mentor, and founder of Inclusive Journalism, I divide my time between Europe (Amsterdam) and Southeast Asia.
  • Next to my work in media, I studied yoga for the last 14 years and I specialize in yin yoga. I use the knowledge and experience from my yoga teacher training and meditation practice in my coaching.
  • I studied decoloniality in several different university-level programs and became acquainted with the most current debates around decolonial critical thought, in particular with the communal and the healing part of antiracism.

Facilitating a session about mental health and teaching yoga, Singapore (2019).
